Tom Blue is the Director of Industry Strategy and Partnerships for the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). Since 2002, his professional interest has been to identify and catalyze new avenues to accelerate the application of modern science in the every-day practice of medicine.
To this end, his work has been oriented to two areas of focus: 1. broadening consumer access to Functional Medicine; and 2. circumnavigating obstacles to the application of Functional Medicine that are inherent in the current design of the US payer system.
As an advocate for direct contracting between patients and primary care physicians, Tom has served since 2009 as the Chief Strategy Officer, media spokesperson, and only non-physician board member for the American Academy of Private Physicians (AAPP), the national professional association for direct primary care (DPC) and concierge physicians. An in 2015, he successfully launched a DPC-integrated, ACA compliant alternative to health insurance called Liberty Direct.
Tom is the co-founder, and serves as the Chief Strategy Officer of LeadHealth, the first employer health organization dedicated to utilizing Functional Medicine to reduce healthcare costs for self-insured employers. Among other achievements, LeadHealth, in collaboration with IFM, has successfully contracted with employers to provide bundled episodes of care via telemedicine to health plan members with advanced autoimmune conditions.
Tom currently serves as an active advisor and/or board member for a number of firms focused on health care transformation through lifestyle medicine, digital health technologies, and advanced diagnostics. In 2016, he was recognized by Forbes as one of the ten would-be signers of the Employers’ Declaration of Independence from health insurance.
